Title: Patent Developments in Mushroom Biotechnology
Authors: S.C. Jong and J.M. Birmingham

Abstract:

Patents contain the most complete and detailed information on technical activity in industry. The first United States patent for mushroom biotechnology was issued in 1905. Through the years the number granted for various growth methods and machinery has escalated significantly. To date, more than 100 US patents are related to the mushroom industry. Not only a process but a strain itself can be patented. Once developed through breeding or genetic engineering, legal protection is available through the Plant Patent Act (1930) or a utility patent (1985). Mushroom cultivation has unlimited possibilities, and patented inventions are stepping-stones to its future.
