Abstract:

In order to obtain high density of mycelium of Lentinus edodes efficiently, a continuous culture system was investigated. The productivity of the mycelium (mg of dry weight of mycelmm/ml/h) was 14-fold higher at a dilution rate of 0 03 h1 than that in a batch culture. The morphology of the mycelium changed from pellet to pulp form with increasing agitation rate in the range 400-500 rpm in the continuous culture. At the same time, the density of the mycelium was 20 mg/ml at a dilution rate of 0 01 h ‘ Lignin, which had been known to accelerate the growth of L. edodes, had no effect on the mycelium production, but promoted the glucose consumption rate. The culture could be continued for more than 70 days without any bacterial contamination.
