Abstract:

Volume 13 Part 1 Article 51 The crude extracts were purified using a sucrose gradient (15-55%) and three bands were obtained from both extracts. The second band from the top of gradient (approximately 27% sucrose) had the highest concentration of virus. In this band, two different shaped viruses were seen. The first type was spherical and present in lower quantity; these were frequently seen attached onto the cylindrical shaped virus particles. The cylindrical shaped viruses were present in high numbers. However, the lengths of these cylindrical viruses were rather varied. The content from band two was used in protection studies. Preliminary results indicated some degree of protection against influenza virus infection in chick embryo fibroblast cells.
