Abstract:

Volvanella volvacea, the straw mushroom, has long been considered as a primary homothallic species However, it is difficult to prove whether the fertile isolates are denved from the true self-fertile monosporous isolates or are resulted from the cross-mated heterokaryon due to its multinucleate nature and absence of clamp connections. Therefore, the production of marked strain offers a possible means of resolving this problem. In this study, mutant strains, malachite green resistant mutants and aspartate-requinng auxotroph (asp ) have been used to study the sexuality pattern of Volvanella volvacea Results from progeny analysis showed that over 90% monosporous isolates of mutants retained their marker’s phenotypes It could be concluded that V. volvacea is a pnmary homothallic species.
