Volvanella volvacea (Bull.: Fr.) Sing., var. Heimii Sing., the paddy straw mushroom of the tropics and subtropics is an excellent edible fungus. Among the few edible mushrooms cultivated in India, paddy straw mushroom was found to be better adapted for the warm humid climatic conditions of the State of Kerala (India). Hence a detailed study of the morphology, cultural characters and cultivation techniques were taken up and the results obtained can be extended to areas enjoying similar climatic conditions.
